We moved to Cherbourg for a change after 15 years on the south coast (UK). Our first base was Cherbourg which is fine for quick trips to the Channel Islands and N Brittany but its a bit of a slog east to Fecamp (for Benedictine) which is almost as far as the Solent. Having experienced the low cost of berthing (which generally includes electricity and WiFi) which is less than half the cost for UK its not an easy decision to move back. Cherborg is fairly easy to reach by ferry in the summer but the service does not run in winter now and its necessary to go to Caen or Le Havre.
After four years in Cherbourg We have now moved to S Brittany on the river Vilaine. We visited some attractive ports on the passage south including L'Aberwrach (where we were accompanied by dolphins for some time on the inward passage), Brest, Benodet (best fresh fish shop we have seen) and Lorient.

I will post more of the river Vilaine after we have more experience of it.
