From Mike Toomey
I am the current owner of a Dehler 34 with very stiff steering , looking for an overview of how to drop the rudder and replace the bearings. Alternative solutions welcome.

I am facing the same task of removing my rudder. Did you ever get any responses to your posting and do you have any comments/advice?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

I have a Dehler 34 Top (1993) and every two years we need to drop the rudder as it gets stiff, we generally drop it when the boat is being craned out for winter, easy to do if you screw an eye bolt attached to rope into the top of the stock. Solution to stiffness we have found best is section of pipe insulation the same diameter roughly as the rudder stock, wrap medium/course sandpaper around it and take a few millimeters off the bearing. This has worked successfully for the last 6 or so years with us.

Thanks for the response. I had already successfully removed, but your idea of using an eye bolt in the stock end is a great one. Regards, Dan

Hi
I'm having trouble removing the rudder on my vds 34. It seems to get stuck in the lower bearing on the key?
Any ideas?

I removed my rudder about 3 years ago. The key at the top of the rudder must be removed of course (likely it will fall out if you don't remove it) and the set screws at the top yolk, and then the rudder should come straight out. I ended up replacing my rudder and stern tube/lower bearing and am happy to share experiences.

Hi Danrees
Thanks for that. Ive got the key off now and out it's slipped :)

I might take this opportunity to do the rudder bearing now. Where did you get a new one from and how did you get it out and attach the new one?

My project got complicated, as boat projects are want to do. I had corrosion in my rudder stock and decided to replace the rudder with a Jefa rudder, along with a new rudder bearing from Jefa - and the new rudder bearing had to be in a new stern tube, so a big project. I did try and find a replacement rudder bearing to use instead of going with Jefa (as the new rudder shaft dimensions are the same as the original), but I could not find a bearing that would fit in the original stern tube. The project required cutting out the original stern tube and glassing in a new stern tube and then bearing and rudder installation. All turned out well and I'm quite happy with the result. I live in Seattle and purchased the Jefa rudder and bearing through PYI in the Seattle area. I went with the Jefa Self-aligning PETP lower roller bearings type 6T and have been very happy with it. Jefa website is http://jefa.com/products/bearings/6t000.htm
Good luck to you - let me know how it goes.

Thanks for that.
I'm repairing a report repair that the previous owner did and have found a white waxy substance in the foam....does anyone know what that could be?
