Worn rudder post

Worn rudder post

Postby Plerionskip » Mon Jun 02, 2014 12:02 pm

My 1986 Optima 101 (tiller steering) has considerable play in the lower bearing that comes mostly from the spiral ridges on the rudder post being worn. The wear is primarily on the forward facing side, with some on the lateral sides.
I was tempted to have a bead of aluminium filler rod laid on top, but was cautioned about risk of annealing the metal, depending on the alloy used in the rudder post.
Any similar experiences? Clues as to the alloy in the post? How about changing the lower bearing (I have a new spare)?
Many thanks,
David

Look at the Jefa rudder website, there's a series of pictures that show the repairs to a worn rudder stock and the replacement of the lower rudder bearing on a Dehler 31.

The rudder bearings are available from Gavin here on the site. I also have some play which was made better by replacing the top and bottom bearings. If you do rework your rudder post, please let me know how it goes.
