Steering Wheel Removal

Postby JohnGaia » Wed Sep 10, 2014 11:46 am

We are trying to remove the steering wheel from our 35 CWS.
We have removed the main sheet traveller, grab bar, centre nut and freed the pedestal to tip the wheel back but it will not clear the binnacle well.
Disconnecting the track rod does not appear to help. Has anyone any experience of doing this?
nb the reason for asking is to have a broken and cracked spoke welded which we are going to have to do in situ if a solution for removal isn't found.

I know it is a rather old question.

Did you ever found a solution?
I've tried removing my wheel too, bad gave up in the end.

Hi kimbp
No I did exacly what you have done and welded the broken spoke in situ, its still good.
Regarding the water tank it looks like you have the additional tank. Not sure where you'd put another 100 lts without sacrificing limited storage.
Nb Ive now sold my share in the boat to my boat share and still sail her so long as I help with the maintenence. No problem if you want to ask any more, I loved the boat and still do but was finding her a bit lively and tender on longer passages in my mid 70's.

Do you remember what kind of welding you used? I'm a bit afraid of ending up damaging parts of the piedestal.
